Atmospheric survival horror for PC

Dark Hotel is a free adventure game for PC developed by indie developer Codeless Man Games. In this first-person survival horror, players will find themselves alone inside a dark and eerie hotel, and they must figure a way out while trying to avoid a mysterious presence that grows ever closer.

Dark Hotel comes across as being quite similar to Dark Deception or Type to Continue in terms of overall feel and presentation. The game was made using the Unreal Engine, though, and it definitely shows in the detailed rooms and hallway that players will explore.

What is it about?

Dark Hotel is a short survival horror game played in the first-person perspective. In it, you wake up in a hotel that has been seemingly abandoned. Armed with just a flashlight and very little lighting around, you will need to figure things out as you explore the dark and barely visible hallway and rooms, and find a way out. You’re not alone, though.

You realize there is a haunting presence creeping ever closer to you. Your situation now becomes a race for your survival and against time. When it comes to controlling your character, you’ll be using keyboard and mouse. Your WASD keys will be used for movement, while your Left Mouse button is for interacting with objects and such. Click your Scroll Wheel button to zoom in and get a better perspective.

For better immersion, the game's sound effects were also designed using Audacity, a robust and full-fledged open-source audio recorder and editor. Make sure to wear headphones for the best experience possible. As mentioned earlier, Dark Hotel is a short game, clocking in at around 10 minutes to finish, which some players will find to be a rather short runtime. There are also plenty of jump scares, so proceed with caution.

Short but memorable

All in all, Dark Hotel is a good survival horror game. The spooky and atmospheric vibe is spot on, the graphics look great, and the expertly created sound effect rounds out the unique experience. Admittedly, the entire playthrough is quite short, but if you have some time to spare, this one is worth checking out and playing.

PROS

  • Eerie and atmospheric presentation
  • Created using Unreal Engine
  • Sound effects made by Audacity

CONS

  • Short playthrough
  • Some might find the jump scare to be too much
